How qEEG Brain Mapping Can Improve Therapy
By Aspire Counseling Denver

When people seek counseling, they know how they're feeling, but they don’t always know why.
You may be struggling with anxiety, difficulty focusing, poor sleep, emotional overwhelm, or feeling "stuck," even though you've tried therapy, medication, or other approaches. One tool that can provide additional insight is a quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG), commonly referred to as a Brain Map.
At Aspire Counseling Denver, we use qEEG Brain Mapping to better understand how the brain is functioning and to help guide personalized neurofeedback training when appropriate.
What Is a qEEG Brain Map?
A qEEG (Quantitative Electroencephalogram) is a non-invasive assessment that measures the brain's electrical activity.
During the assessment, small sensors are placed on the scalp to record brainwave activity. The sensors only measure activity; they don’t send electricity into the brain.
The information collected is then analyzed using specialized software that compares your brainwave patterns to a large database of healthy individuals of the same age. This comparison helps identify areas where your brain may be working differently than expected.

Think of it like having a "map" of your brain's activity.
What Can a Brain Map Tell Us?
A qEEG Brain Map is not used to diagnose mental health conditions on its own. Instead, it provides valuable information that can complement a comprehensive clinical evaluation.

Brain Mapping may reveal patterns associated with:
Anxiety and chronic stress
ADHD and attention difficulties
Emotional regulation challenges
Depression
Trauma-related symptoms
Sleep concerns
Brain fog
Peak performance concerns
Difficulties with focus or concentration
It's important to remember that every brain is unique. A Brain Map helps us better understand how your brain is functioning, allowing us to create a treatment plan that is individualized to your specific needs.
What Happens Before, During,
and After a qEEG Brain Map?
The Brain Mapping appointment is simple and painless.

Before Your Appointment
Before your appointment, one of our trained clinicians will explain the entire process and give you an opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

During Your Appointment
Your clinician will place sensors on your scalp using a conductive paste and record your brain activity while your eyes are open and closed.
When the process is finished, your clinician will remove the sensors and clean your hair as much as possible before you leave.
The recording itself usually takes only a few minutes, while the entire appointment typically lasts about 60 to 90 minutes.

After Your Appointment
Once your Brain Map has been analyzed, your clinician will review the results with you.
You'll receive a detailed explanation of your brain's strengths as well as areas that may be functioning less efficiently. You’ll learn how the findings relate to your symptoms and whether neurofeedback may be beneficial, and you’ll also get recommendations for your individualized treatment plan

Many clients appreciate finally having a visual representation of what may be contributing to the challenges they've been experiencing.
Frequently Asked Questions
about qEEG Brain Mapping
In this section, we’ll cover some of the most common questions we hear from clients who are considering Brain Mapping.
Does Everyone Need a Brain Map?
No. Some clients benefit from beginning traditional psychotherapy without a Brain Map. Others choose neurofeedback without completing a qEEG.
However, for clients pursuing neurofeedback, Brain Mapping often provides valuable information that allows treatment to be more personalized and targeted.
Your clinician will help determine whether Brain Mapping is appropriate based on your goals, symptoms, and clinical history.
Is Brain Mapping Safe?
Yes. Brain Mapping is completely non-invasive and painless. The sensors only record the brain's natural electrical activity—they do not stimulate or change the brain in any way.
There are no known long-term risks associated with a qEEG assessment.
Can a Brain Map diagnose ADHD?
No. A qEEG Brain Map does not diagnose ADHD or any other mental health condition by itself. It is one assessment tool that may provide information to support a broader clinical evaluation.
Does insurance cover Brain Mapping?
Insurance coverage varies depending on your plan and the services provided. Our administrative team can help verify your benefits and discuss available options before scheduling.
Will I receive a copy of my Brain Map?
Yes. Your clinician will review your results with you and discuss how they relate to your treatment recommendations.
Do I need a referral?
No, a referral is not necessary. If you're interested in learning whether Brain Mapping may be right for you, simply contact our office to schedule a consultation.

Although Brain Mapping provides valuable information, it does not tell the whole story.
